Puri

What is around you when you step out

The Math stands on Basanta Road at Balagandi, between the Grand Road and the sea, on the route the chariots take each July.

Distances are walking distances from the gate, not from the middle of town.

About Shree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, Puri

Shree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math is a Gaudiya Vaishnava math on Basanta Road, Balagandi, in Puri. It stands in the line of Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura, whose Gaudiya Math was established in Bengal in the early twentieth century; Shree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math itself was formed in 1953, in the period after his disappearance when that mission divided into a number of separate branches.

Where the Math is, and how far Sri Mandira is

The address is Basanta Road, Balagandi, Puri, Odisha 752001 — reading it out in full to an auto driver is more reliable than asking for the Math by name. Sri Jagannath Temple is about 2 km away, and the sea at Balagandi about 0.7 km in the other direction.

Rooms, and what they cost

There are four kinds of accommodation and three published rates. A non-AC double is ₹800 a night, the same room air-conditioned is ₹1,000, and the two-bedroom family suite is ₹1,800 air-conditioned or ₹1,500 without. Group accommodation is quoted on the call, because what is free depends entirely on the season.

Prasadam, facilities and what to expect

Satvik prasadam is cooked in the Math kitchen and offered before it is served — no meat, fish or eggs, and no onion or garlic. It is served in the dining hall rather than to the room, and at the hours the kitchen keeps rather than on request.

Shree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math photos

Every photograph on this site is a photograph of this Math — the gateway, the deities, the painted corridors, the rooms and the bathrooms as they actually are. Nothing here is stock photography, and nothing has been borrowed from another building.

Before you plan your stay

Plan around darshan rather than around the room. Sri Mandira is busiest at weekends, through Rath Yatra and around Kartik, and the queue is shortest very early. Staying at Balagandi means you can walk up before dawn rather than drive into the middle of it.

Questions

Asked before they travel

The distance to Sri Mandira, what a room costs, prasadam, house rules and Rath Yatra. If your question is not here, ask it directly and the Math will answer.

  • How far is Shree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math from Sri Jagannath Temple?

About 2 km. It is a walk of roughly half an hour up from Balagandi, which most guests do before dawn, or a few minutes by auto at any other time of day.

See all distances and the map

  • What do the rooms cost?

₹800 a night for a non-AC double, ₹1,000 for the same room air-conditioned, and ₹1,800 for the two-bedroom family suite — ₹1,500 for the suite without air conditioning. Group accommodation is quoted when you call.

    The full tariff

  • How do I book a room?

Send a WhatsApp message or call with your dates, how many are travelling and how many rooms you need, and you will be told what is free. There is no online booking engine on this site, nothing is charged here, and no deposit is taken online.

    Contact details

  • Is food available?

Yes — satvik prasadam is cooked in the Math kitchen, offered, and served daily in the dining hall. It contains no meat, fish or eggs, and no onion or garlic. It is served at the kitchen's hours rather than to order, so ask about times when you arrive.

  • Are there any house rules?

This is a math, so yes. Guests are asked to dress modestly and to keep meat, fish, eggs, alcohol and tobacco off the premises entirely. Beyond that it is the ordinary courtesy of a building where people rise for mangala aarti — quiet at night, particularly in the corridors.

  • Can a large group stay together?

Yes. There is group accommodation for pilgrim parties and yatra groups, and the two-bedroom suite keeps a family in one place rather than split across floors. Mention the size of the group when you message — what is available really does depend on the season.

  • What are the check-in and check-out times?

Check-in is from 12:00 noon and check-out is 11:00 am. A valid photo ID is needed for every adult guest at check-in, as it is at any lodging in India.

  • Can I stay during Rath Yatra?

The Math is on the Rath Yatra route at Balagandi, where the chariots halt — which is the best possible address in July and the reason the rooms go months in advance. Ask very early, and expect to be told honestly if there is nothing left.

  • Is there air conditioning, hot water and a lift?

Air conditioning in the AC rooms, hot water around the clock in every room, and a lift to the upper floors. There is RO drinking water, power backup and CCTV on the premises. Anything not on the facilities page is not here — ask before you travel rather than assume.

    Everything the Math has

  • How do I get to Puri?

Puri is the terminus of its railway line, so every train that comes here stops here. By road it is about ninety minutes from Bhubaneswar, whose airport is the nearest at roughly 60 km. Ask an auto driver for Balagandi on Basanta Road rather than for the Math by name.
